Welding-blanket selection starts only after you know the hazard is sparks and spatter. If the requirement is to smother a small, early-stage fire in a kitchen, lab, or plant cabinet, you are in the wrong family.

How should spark load steer the family?

Spark load is the volume and frequency of molten debris the cloth must take. It is the first welding-specific filter — not “which safety product,” only which weld blanket family.

How does duty cycle change thickness?

Duty cycle is how long the blanket stays in the heat and under foot traffic. A thicker, heavier cloth lasts longer between inspections when it is not folded away after each weld.

  • Cover comes out for a job, then is inspected and stored

    Medium-duty vermiculite cloth is usually enough if spark load is light.

  • Blanket stays on the floor or hung as a screen for a shift

    Step up GSM and thickness so the coating lasts between inspections.

  • Cover stays down all week under grinding or overhead work

    Specify the heavier DSZVCF band (4.0–5.0 mm / 1700–2200 GSM).

Which listed temperature window do you need?

Use the working-temperature range printed on the model. We do not invent fire-rating hours or melting points. If your permit quotes a number above 1000 °C for weld-spatter contact, you are off the medium-duty window.

Medium duty — DSZMDWB2.4

900 °C to 1000 °C. Everyday fabrication welding and lighter spatter. Confirm on Signature Medium Duty Welding Blanket.

Heavy — DSZVCF family

DSZVCF2.5: 1200 °C to 1760 °C. DSZVCF2.8 through DSZVCF5.0: 1260 °C to 1760 °C. Confirm models on Signature Welding Blanket.

Coating and construction: vermiculite, SS, or non-metallic?

Both Signature welding-blanket families are vermiculite coated and brown. The construction split that matters for procurement is reinforcement — steel in the cloth versus non-metallic fabric.

  • Vermiculite coating

    Mineral coating that will not burn. Spatter tends to sit and knock off instead of welding into the weave. Inspect after use; replace when the coating is worn through, holed, or brittle.

  • SS metallic reinforced (DSZVCF roll models)
